James Walton. Not only did it seem too obvious a way to go; it also felt a bit unfair to compare a deservedly revered programme that ran for 12 years with a single episode that went out on Wednesday. But then I saw that single episode. Mitchell may not play an uptight, well-meaning loser, or Webb a preening, conscience-free charmer. Is he just a chancer or is he much worse than that? Waiting to find out adds an intriguing, almost psychological-thriller element to what already looks like being one of the best new shows of the autumn.

By Michael Deacon. How many sketch shows are still funny, four series in? The Fast Show finished after three — and had in any case stopped being consistently funny after two. So David Mitchell and Robert Webb are doing well. As a duo, they remind me of Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie, not only in their comic personae fogeyish brainbox partnered by cheery doofus but in their style of writing: lots of verbal playfulness and self-referential smartness and spoofs of bad television, and few recurring characters. And again like Fry and Laurie, who loved lampooning the fatuous patter of estate agents, Mitchell and Webb are frequently at their funniest when exposing some modern vacuity or bunkum.
