The Book of Dreams and Ghosts - AbeBooks - Andrew Lang:

Great post - I really enjoyed it. I enjoy 'true' ghost stories very much too. I've based a few of my own stories on them. I love M R James, but I don't like too neat an explanation of a ghost. I once met a policeman who told me there was a street on his beat where, at night, a man was reguarly seen standing in a shop doorway. There was nothing notable about him: he was just an ordinary man in quite ordinary clothes. Everyone who walked that beat saw him I was told.

Andrew Lang's activities extended far beyond folklore. He was a historian, poet, journalist, translator, and anthropologist, in connection with his work on literary texts. His anthropology and his defense of the value of folklore as the basis of religionhis most influential workis expressed in Custom and Myth , Myth, Ritual and Religion , and The Making of Religion He also translated Homer and critiqued James G. Frazer's views of mythology as expressed in The Golden Bough.

The chief purpose of this book is, if fortune helps, to entertain people interested in the kind of narratives here collected. For the sake of orderly arrangement, the stories are classed in different grades, as they advance from the normal and familiar to the undeniably startling. At the same time an account of the current theories of Apparitions is offered, in language as free from technicalities as possible. According to modern opinion every "ghost" is a "hallucination," a false perception, the perception of something which is not present.
