Swallows and Amazons (Swallows and Amazons Series #1)
The Swallows and Amazons series is a series of twelve children's books by English author Arthur Ransome , named after the title of the first book in the series and set in the Interwar period. The twelve books involve adventures by groups of children, almost all during the school holidays and mostly in England, but including four sailing trips that go outside England. The stories revolve around outdoor activities, especially sailing. Literary scholar Peter Hunt said he believes the series " The series remains popular today. It contributes to the tourist industry in the Lake District and Norfolk Broads areas of England, where many of the books are set. There are also several societies dedicated to the study and promotion of Ransome's work which are largely inspired by the series.
Originally published in the UK over a half century ago, these books are still eagerly read by children, despite their length and their decidedly British protagonists. We attribute their success to two facts: first, Ransome is a great storyteller and, second, he clearly writes from first-hand experience. Independence and initiative are qualities any child can understand and every volume in this collection celebrates these virtues.

I think the authority figures, as I recall, are "respected" as people, not as authority figures. Note that for Uncle Jim, said respect includes making him walk the plank after he effectively agrees that they can make him do so. If you'd care to post an example of said disrespect, I'd be interested in exploring that further. In particular, I think that there is a strong undercurrent of secretiveness with regard to informing authority figures, but nothing so broad as general disrespect. Also, let me add the Callum parents to the Walker parents as respected figures although they don't really seem to appear directly, we learn about them and their childrens' interaction with them. I have the whole set except Pigeon Post which I've read, of course. I would have trouble narrowing my favourite book down to one, but I always preferred the ones set around the Lake, and of course with Suzannah , "We Didn't Mean to Go to Sea".
